The First Children's Toothpaste with Postbiotics - and Why It's Important to Start Early

It's a moment almost every parent knows: the toothbrush is loaded, the brushing song is playing, and your child decides, purely on principle, that toothpaste tastes better swallowed than spat out. Funny in the moment, sure. But it's also exactly the question we've spent years thinking about: what actually belongs in a child's mouth, and why?

Because oral care for kids isn't a smaller, cuter version of oral care for adults. It's the foundation everything else gets built on.

Why Early Oral Care Is the Foundation, Not an Extra

Baby teeth fall out eventually anyway — so does it really matter if a few cavities show up along the way? It's a common line of thinking, and it happens to be wrong. Baby teeth are more than placeholders: they guide where and how the permanent teeth underneath will come in. Untreated decay in early childhood is consistently linked to a higher risk of decay in the permanent teeth later on — not to mention the pain, the missed sleep, and the missed daycare or school days for the whole family.

In short: what happens in a three-year-old's mouth doesn't stay there. It sets the direction for everything that follows.

What Starting Early Really Means Over a Lifetime

The habits we build in the first few years are the ones that stick — not because children are told why brushing matters, but because at some point it simply becomes something they've always done, the same way buckling a seatbelt or washing hands before dinner just is. A calm, fear-free relationship with brushing and with the dentist in early childhood is one of the strongest signs that this relationship stays calm decades later, too.

And the effect doesn't stop at the mouth. At Natch, we think about health holistically: what happens in the mouth is never fully separate from the rest of the body. Inflammation and a balanced oral environment are connected to overall wellbeing throughout life — one more reason the earliest years deserve just as much attention as any other stage.

Postbiotics: Working With the Mouth's Microbiome, Not Against It

Most oral care has traditionally taken a "kill everything" approach — fight bacteria indiscriminately and hope for the best. Postbiotics take a different path. They're compounds extracted from probiotics during fermentation, valued for supporting gut and oral wellbeing. Unlike probiotics, these beneficial substances are non-living and more stable.

In the mouth, postbiotics help support the good bacteria and regulate unwanted germs. They help keep the oral microbiome in balance, reduce bad breath, support lasting freshness, and protect and strengthen the gums.

Why Are Postbiotics Revolutionary?

To understand how to support a well-balanced oral environment, it helps to know three key players:

  • Prebiotics — the fuel. Nutrients, often from plant fiber, that feed beneficial bacteria.
  • Probiotics — the workforce. Live bacteria found in fermented foods and supplements.
  • Postbiotics — the result. Stable, non-living bioactive compounds created during fermentation.

Postbiotics are valued in oral care for their stability and their role in supporting a well-cared-for oral environment. As fermentation-derived bioactive substances, they help create conditions that are more favorable for beneficial bacteria — contributing to a healthy oral ecosystem. In Tooth-Monster Mango, Passion Fruit & Guava, postbiotics help to:

  • Support a balanced oral environment
  • Support gum health
  • Support the maintenance of healthy-looking teeth and gums

This is the foundation of our formula — postbiotic technology working daily to support the conditions your oral microflora needs to thrive.

Tooth-Monster Mango, Passion Fruit & Guava: Postbiotics for Small Mouths

This is where our relaunched Tooth-Monster Mango, Passion Fruit & Guava comes in — the first children's toothpaste in Germany to contain postbiotics. It's built on our trusted Bubblegum base: fluoride-free calcium hydroxyapatite for remineralization, soap bark tree for gentle foaming, xylitol for sweetening, and guar gum for a creamy texture. The only thing missing is the zeolites — and the new addition is postbiotics. Recommended from age 3.

Just as important as the formula, though, is the monster itself. Tooth-Monster's playful character and its bright, friendly jar turn brushing from a chore into something kids actually look forward to. When brushing feels like a small adventure instead of a battle, kids reach for the toothbrush more often, and more willingly — and a habit only sticks if a child genuinely wants to keep it up.

It's the same thinking that got us started in the first place: a toddler who swallows his toothpaste shouldn't be a source of parental panic. He should just be a toddler, brushing his teeth, building a habit that will serve him for the rest of his life.

How It All Started

Heber-and-son

Some ideas don't come from a business plan. They come from a very personal moment. Back in 2018, our co-founder Heber was brushing his two-and-a-half-year-old son Liam's teeth when he noticed, once again, that the toothpaste was ending up swallowed rather than spat out. Instead of just living with it, he asked a simple but rarely asked question: why doesn't toothpaste taste good, feel healthy, come without warning labels, and work sustainably? That question sent him experimenting with natural, food-grade ingredients until the first Natch toothpaste tabs were born.

Eight years later, Liam is old enough to brush his own teeth — and the question that started it all still shapes everything we make, Tooth-Monster included.

Healthy habits don't need to start complicated. They just need to start early — and they're allowed to be fun, too.
